10 years ago my boyfriend and I went on a mini vacation weekend over Memorial weekend. We drove up to Mackinac Island. This island is unique, because no cars are allowed you get everywhere on the island via bike or horse. It's a great little place.
We saw butterflies, went on a carriage ride. Saw tulips galore.
Oh, and yes, my boyfriend proposed to me.
Here we are at the fountain in the gardens in front of the Grand Hotel (where 'Somewhere In Time' was filmed.) He asked a stranger if they'd take our photo of us. They did. Then he asked if they'd do it again, but with the hotel in the background. They obliged.
Here he is pulling the box out of his pocket and asking "Will you marry me?". And the lady taking the photos, I heard her exclaim, "He didn't! He did!"
And here I am with a ring on my finger... meaning I said, "Yes." That woman who took these photos disappeared during our excitement. We never got to thank her.
All the photos after that, I'm blatantly showing off my ring!
We haven't been back to the island since. Anyhow, 10 years later and a 4 year old toddler now in our family, we decided it was time to go back and visit the island on our 10 year anniversary of the proposal.
We found a B&B on the island and have talked it up with Ashton for weeks. She was really excited to go.
So in typical fashion we planned well, but everything still fell apart. The night before we had to make the long drive north, Ashton wouldn't sleep a wink. She had really bad growing pains and cried all night, keeping us up all night! I finally had her asleep in my arms by 6:30 am. Only an hour before we were to wake up. Of course the hubby slept in an extra hour from lack of sleep, so we were behind. I didn't sleep all night. Who could when your sitting up and having your arms throb from having her daughter snuggle up and snore in them?
But regardless of the night, she woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed as usual. She was ready to go.
We took off and it's about 20 minutes to the highway, right before we got on, my husband said he forgot his wallet! So we had to turn around and go back!
We didn't get our early start. But we finally got out of Indianapolis and made our way to Michigan.
Ashton did really well. We decided since the long drive and the island having few toilets available that Ashton would wear her pull-ups for the trip. I hated to go back a step especially doing so well with overnight potty training, but when she has to go, she has to go and it's not always easy to get to a restroom on time. With a long drive and no vehicles on the island, I wanted to be safe than sorry.
Once we got to Mackinaw City we had to take the ferry across the lake to the island. Ashton was so looking forward to the boat ride and couldn't wait to go super fast!
It went pretty fast and felt pretty cold. But to Ashton it didn't go fast enough!
We made it to our B&B and then decided to get a late dinner. We found a few shops open and checked them out. Ashton was having a blast and started saying hello to EVERY horse she saw. "Hi horsey!" She'd wave and just squeal with delight!
We found a little Italian place that made calzones, which my hubby loves. So we stopped in there. Ashton loved sitting in the high chairs and learning to spin coins.
That's all we had time for before hitting the sack. But we made it all in one piece, and hopefully not forgetting anything like a wallet back home!
